MightyMite and cheese scrolls

I haven't bought Vegemite for years. I don't want to buy Vegemite.

I buy Mighty Mite, made by the Three Threes company. It's Australian made and owned and I have been eating for I don't know how long. It is not as strong as the others stuff and tastes slightly different, but it's what I am used to. It's what the girls are used to, and have been brought up with. It's a crap load cheaper too.

It is sad that Dick Smith is having so much trouble with the Vegemite company. It may be Australian to eat Vegemite, but the way they are going after Ozemite, isn't. I'd rather my money stay in our country, supporting Aussie jobs and families.

Anyhoo, besides that, it is the last week of term here in SA, and Izzy's kindy had their breakup nibbles yesterday. I woke up in the morning, with the startling realisation that I needed to take a savoury to share. But what!

Thankfully this came to mind, and it takes no time at all.

Thank goodness for scone dough. It makes all sorts of good stuff, like pizza base, savoury scones, and sweet scones.

You can add all sorts of stuff into this scroll, like olives, bacon, herbs, sun dried tomatoes, pesto or different cheeses. Oh course substituting out for the Mighty Mite.

For a sweet alternative, spreading with jam and adding sultanas or walnuts, cinnamon and drizzling with icing! Hellooo!

Mighty Mite and Cheese Scrolls

2 cups Self Raising Flour
pinch salt
2 teaspoons margarine or butter
1 cup milk

grated cheese
mighty mite or vegemite

Rub butter into flour and salt with fingertips.

Add milk and mix gently until a soft dough forms.

Roll out into a rectangle shape.

Spread dough with Mighty Mite and then grate cheese over the top.

Carefully roll up the longest side into a log, and cut into 2 cm slices.

Place scrolls onto a greased tray and bake at 190C for 15 minutes.

Our show success

We've just had our local country show this weekend. Izzy entered into seven sections of the kindy competition and I in the photography. We did pretty well.

Izzy won or got a place in everything she entered, so proud. She was first in her craft piece, a paper mache bowl that she made and painted; her decorated biscuits and her chocolate crackles. Her painting received second place and her drawing, eggs and flowers got third. She won the overall points for the kindy section and won a jigsaw puzzle and $8.50. Pretty cool.

I entered 26 photos in the photography section and got 4 firsts and 3 second placings. Happy with that, not bad for my first photo competition. I won 29 bucks. Awesoooome. I spent $18 of it on wine. Awesooome!

Definitely doing it again next year, might even get Summer involved too.

Izzy goes to kindy

Yesterday Izzy had her first day at kindy. With the same day start policy in place, and her turning four after the end of April she won't start full time kindy until next year. So this last term she is attending a half day on a Wednesday as pre-entry.

I have no problems with her not starting full time until next year. She won't turn four until next month. But for some of her kindy mates, who turned four way back at the start of May, three days after the cut off, the long wait to start full time kindy seems a bit ridiculous to me. But the powers that be obviously know what they're doing, I hope.

Tuesday night Izzy was telling me we couldn't go anywhere the next day because she was sick. I think she was having some doubts about this kindy bizzo. She knows the kindy and the teachers, we've been going there for playgroup. She is fine about me leaving her for an hour at gym with the instructor. I was quietly confident that she would be ok.

On Wednesday morning, I was excited, trying to make her excited, it was kindy day!! She said she was sick and couldn't go anywhere.

She was so proud putting it on all by herself and then
pestering "Can we go, I want to go".

I'm not sure what I said, it might have been something about her new backpack, whatever it was, all of a sudden she was feeling better.

Izzy helped pack her snack, an apple and some pizza shapes into her new lunch pack, made sure she had her hat and put it in her  backpack along with her new water bottle. This was a bargain set I picked up at a market for 5 bucks. No fancy Barbie, Billabong or Disney backpacks here, it's only kindy. I have many more years of mind numbing brand name nagging when she hits puberty, or possibly before, I don't want to start a trend.

Nag she did though, "I want to go to my kindy", "Can we go to kindy now?". This went on and on. I was so glad when 12 noon rolled around and I could go drop her off.

I did feel a pang of emotion as we got out the car, we found her bag locker and signed her in, I stayed with her until 12:15, when lunch finished and said goodbye. No fuss. No tears. Nothing. I walked out to the gate, Summer on my hip, got in the car and pulled out the car park.

A rush of freedom swept over me, I smiled. I smiled because it was easy. Stress free. She handled it like a champion. I was so relieved, like a weight had been lifted. She's gonna be ok. It was a different story with Jake when he started kindy, different kid.

I went home and gardened, Summer my little shadow. She was happy. I was happy. I gardened without the interruption of Izzy needing help with anything, not having to go see who was crying, no fighting. It was awesome.

I can't wait until next Wednesday!

I got swag

I am really enjoying doing the 'My place in time' photo project. I wish I had more time to cruise around taking awesome photos of my local area.

When Izzy starts pre-entry kindy this final school term, I will have three hours on a Wednesday, when me and Summer can just amble about town, her strapped firmly in a pram of course. I can start doing a few more things I want to do, and lord knows next year when she starts full time kindy, I will be looking for things to keep me busy.

Anyhoo, back to the 'I got swag' bizzo.

Yesterday I posted 'A river view', and this first photo.

I didn't even notice it when I walked up and took the photo, it wasn't until I was walking back towards the car, it caught my eye. It kinda freaked me out a bit, seeing something familiar laying under a tree by the side of the road.

It had a few ants running over it, well several, and a few bugs. I tossed it in the boot and drove home.

The kids slept on the way home and I left them in there while I sorted out the swag, and sorted out all the sandy stuff from a day at the beach.

I armed myself with a can of bug spray and went about unrolling it. Let's just say spider central, 1 big black one and lots of little ones, I must have looked like a crazy lady trying to do whack-a-mole with my feet. It wasn't quite as bad as it sounds. I opened up the inside just a bit and gave it a good spray inside, much to my surprise the inside was clean and tidy with no bugs whatsoever.

My guess is it belonged to a younger person and it must have been here for at least three months, maybe six.

I'd scored myself a good single swag. Not that I'll be sleeping outdoors any time soon, but the kids will get some use out of it hopefully when they are a bit older.
